Akamai launches Managed Container Service for low latency

Yesterday

Akamai Technologies has launched a Managed Container Service aimed at enabling companies to enhance user experiences by running workloads nearer to users, devices, and data sources.

The service is being implemented across over 700 cities, where Akamai's servers are stationed at more than 4,300 points of presence. Akamai is currently trialling the Managed Container Service with customer applications in excess of 100 cities.

Adam Karon, Chief Operating Officer and General Manager of the Cloud Technology Group at Akamai, stated: "Our new Managed Container Service leverages the entirety of Akamai's global presence, which means customers can take advantage of Akamai's 700-plus cities to run and scale their workloads. As with other services on Akamai Cloud, businesses can maintain predictable costs as their applications scale. This is a critical capability as we strive to become a key platform in enterprise multicloud environments."

The service is designed to enable the operation of data-intensive workloads in closer proximity to users.

It utilises Akamai's comprehensive cloud computing infrastructure, including graphical processing units (GPUs), visual processing units (VPUs), object storage, a managed database service, and complete network services.

This capability is essential for workloads that require high concurrent user support while maintaining consistent performance.

The Managed Container Service consolidates a customer's application code with associated configuration files, libraries, and dependencies needed for application execution.

Dave McCarthy, Research Vice President at IDC, remarked: "Today's modern applications require high performance, low latency, and scalability."

"The Akamai Managed Container Service, part of the Akamai Cloud, underscores Akamai's commitment to providing enterprises with highly responsive infrastructure for delivering a consistent user experience whether their applications run in a central cloud region or across Akamai's 4,300 globally distributed cloud and edge locations."

This initiative signifies an advancement in Akamai's cloud computing strategy, aligning with its efforts to support enterprises in developing and deploying scalable, low-latency applications on a distributed cloud platform.

The Managed Container Service aims to facilitate better application performance by enabling proximity to end users, thereby improving the overall user experience.
