Octopus Energy sees major efficiency boost with Storyblok CMS

Thu, 1st Aug 2024

Storyblok, a modern content management system (CMS), has been deployed by Octopus Energy as part of the company's efforts to manage content more efficiently and reduce dependence on developers.

This move has enabled Octopus Energy to deploy website updates within five minutes and has resulted in a significant two-thirds decrease in requests for support from developers.

Octopus Energy, known for driving the affordable, green energy system of the future, previously relied on a CMS that required substantial developer involvement for every content task. This system, limited in flexibility and customisation options, led to a fragmented content management setup that was both slow and hindered collaboration efforts.

Recognising that their existing CMS was unsustainable for their dynamic content needs, Octopus Energy made the switch to Storyblok. The new CMS allows the company to centralise content management and integrate all their platforms through APIs. Content creators now have the components they need to craft experiences without developer assistance, which has significantly improved collaboration.

Storyblok is now utilised by 19 teams across six business functions in eight countries at Octopus Energy. The combined teamwork facilitated by Storyblok enables Octopus to create a website from scratch within two weeks and deploy updates in just five minutes. Project creation and publishing times have been reduced by one to two days on average, with smaller projects being completed on the same day. This has led to a notable decrease in developer support requests.

Aaron Cawte, Senior Front-end Developer at Octopus Energy, commented on the implementation: "Storyblok's Visual Editor empowers our content editors to click on the content they want to change and see the results in real-time. This enabled us to roll out Storyblok at speed with zero training, and our teams around the world have taken to it like ducks to water."

The success with Storyblok has encouraged Octopus Energy to continue using the CMS for various projects, including the migration of over 1,000 pages from a legacy CMS and the expansion of content for their mobile app.

Sascha Ploebst, VP of Sales at Storyblok, highlighted the advantages of the platform: "Storyblok makes it possible for everyone on the team to be a part of your content efforts. Octopus Energy has seen firsthand why using a CMS that can be adopted by multiple teams, departments, and regions is a smart business decision."

Dominik Angerer, CEO and Co-Founder of Storyblok, also weighed in: "Octopus Energy views energy in the same way we view content: it should be efficient and nothing should be wasted. By centralising content with Storyblok, Octopus Energy is experiencing the benefits of reusable content across all of their platforms."
