Study shows innovation outweighs salary in tech careers

A new study commissioned by Amadeus highlights the preferences and priorities of technology professionals in their careers, work environments, and mental health.

Amadeus's report, "Innovating the Culture of Tomorrow: Exploring how Global Technology Talent Thrives," surveyed 2,200 technology professionals from eight global markets. The study focuses on identifying what motivates these professionals, as well as the workplace conditions that help them thrive.

The findings indicate that 40% of global tech professionals anticipate making at least three career changes during their professional lives to keep up with rapid technological advancements, such as Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, extended reality, and cloud computing. A significant 94% expressed willingness to leave their current roles if not provided with adequate training opportunities.

The report reveals a notable gap in current training provisions, with 24% of professionals believing that their employers do not invest adequately in their continued development. Training on emerging technologies is highlighted as a critical retention factor by 48% of survey participants, even above reduced workloads, personal recognition, and improved work/life balance.

Innovation is identified as a key attractor for technology professionals, even outweighing salary considerations. Professionals at innovative companies report higher job satisfaction, with 43% stating they are "very happy", compared to just 8% from less innovative companies. Additionally, professionals at non-innovative companies are significantly more likely to consider leaving within the next year.

Professor James Berry, Founder of the UCL MBA, commented, "Today, being within an innovative business or using the latest technologies promises tech professionals guaranteed progress and security in an otherwise insecure world. In the study, being perceived as innovative was so important that the average technology professional said they would consider taking a 21% pay cut to work with the leading brand in their sector."

Another crucial aspect identified by the study is the emphasis on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I). A substantial 79% of tech professionals want their employers to demonstrate their DE&I credentials. AI engineers, in particular, rate this factor as "very important", underscoring concerns about potential biases in AI models.

The study also debunks the notion that entertainment facilities like ping pong tables contribute to innovation. Instead, survey respondents stress the provision of up-to-date technology, proper physical workspaces, and facilities for team collaboration as conducive to fostering innovation.

Mental health and psychological safety are highlighted as areas needing improvement. Although 63% of respondents feel comfortable discussing mental health issues at work, there remains a significant minority who do not, suggesting that more needs to be done to create an encouraging environment for open discussions around mental health.
