Akamai enhances API Protector with anti-DDoS & bot detection
Akamai Technologies has announced significant additions to its flagship Akamai App & API Protector product. These enhancements include advanced defences against complex application-layer distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. Layer 7 DDoS protections have been enhanced to precisely detect and mitigate short DDoS attack bursts and utilise client reputation scores for improved rate limiting. Furthermore, a newly added capability, URL Protection, maintains the availability of mission-critical URLs, APIs, and microservices by effectively prioritising legitimate traffic during highly distributed attacks.
The App & API Protector also now boasts the feature of Browser Impersonation Detection, which utilises machine learning to delve deeper into browser behaviours while reducing false positives and facilitating more effective detection of malicious bots.
Additional benefits now available for App & API Protector users include Simple Start Onboard, a tool designed to simplify and speed up self-service onboarding and new application set-up. There will also be a new CVE Protection Catalog which provides insights to prioritise security efforts in line with Akamai's protections. This tool allows the clients to search the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database to ascertain Akamai's active protective measures against a vulnerability and assess the threat level and access CVE details.
Akamai's Client-Side Protection & Compliance is another feature that will assist customers in complying with PCI DSS v4 regulations and numerous worldwide and industry compliance standards. Further benefits now accessible for customers include Advanced SOCC Services. These services are available to customers looking for personalised support and priority escalation pathways via the Security Operations Command Centre (SOCC) and allow users to stay ahead of the most advanced cyber threats.
The App & API Protector is also offering updates on Web Security Analytics. These updates simplify operations and enhance analytics capabilities including customisable dashboards, configuration change indicators, webhook alerts, and shortened deep links for easier sharing.
"The evolution of Akamai App & API Protector demonstrates our focus on innovation and a customer-centric approach", said Rupesh Chokshi, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Application Security at Akamai. "The machine learning enhancements and shared telemetry across Akamai are designed to elevate and simplify web application and API Defense. They provide the necessary strategic edge for businesses to prosper in today's digital economy."
Jerome Etienne, Group Chief Information Security Officer at Groupe Rocher, commended Akamai, saying, "We love working with them. They consistently offer great reliability and performance through their solutions, which are fully compliant with the latest security regulation. The team is almost an extension of our own, acting in a professional capacity and always available if we need any help.
