Anthropic names Irina Ghose to lead India expansion
Anthropic has appointed Irina Ghose as Managing Director of India ahead of the opening of its first office in the country in Bengaluru.
Ghose joins the AI company with more than three decades of experience in technology leadership roles. She most recently served as Managing Director of Microsoft India, where she led work linked to enterprise AI adoption across sectors including banking and financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and government.
Anthropic said Ghose has led large teams and worked on partnerships across India's technology sector. The company also linked the appointment to its plans to expand its presence in India through a local office and a broader engagement programme across public and private sector organisations.
India strategy
Anthropic said its India team will work with policymakers and academic institutions. It also plans developer engagement and partnerships with enterprises and organisations using AI on local challenges.
The company cited usage data as a factor in its focus on the market. Anthropic said India ranks as its second-largest market globally for Claude.ai, the consumer-facing service for its Claude AI models.
Anthropic also referenced results from its fourth Economic Index. It said Indian users show a strong focus on technical applications. The company said nearly half of all Claude.ai usage in India concentrates on computer and mathematical tasks.
Ghose said India is moving from experimentation to more applied use of AI, with a focus on issues such as trust and safety.
"India has a real opportunity to shape how AI is built and deployed at scale," said Irina Ghose, Managing Director of India, Anthropic.
Ghose also pointed to a shift in how organisations view AI deployment. "Indian organizations are moving beyond experimentation toward applied AI, where trust, safety, and long-term impact matter as much as innovation. Anthropic's mission resonates with my belief that technology should empower people, expand access, and create lasting value across India's diverse languages and communities," said Ghose.
Leadership hire
Anthropic positioned the appointment as part of its international expansion and the build-out of local teams. The company said it plans deeper engagement across India's public and private sectors.
Chris Ciauri, Managing Director of International at Anthropic, said Ghose would lead the company's expansion in India and shape its approach in the market.
"Irina's expertise in scaling technology businesses and driving enterprise transformation makes her the ideal leader as we expand," said Chris Ciauri, Managing Director of International, Anthropic.
"As we grow our teams and deepen engagement across India's public and private sectors, Irina will ensure our approach is grounded in local insight and aligned with our mission," said Ciauri.
Anthropic did not disclose the size of its planned Bengaluru office, hiring targets, or timelines for the first phase of team growth. It also did not provide details on the planned scope of its work with policymakers, universities, or the developer community.
The appointment comes as global AI companies increase their focus on India as a large technology market and a major source of developer talent. Ghose's remit includes building the company's local organisation as Anthropic prepares to establish its first office presence in the country.
