Harness acquires Augment assets to expand AI coding
Fri, 9th Oct 2026 (Today)
Harness has acquired selected assets from Augment Code, bringing Cosmos, the Auggie CLI products, the Code Context Engine and related technology into the company.
The Augment team will also join Harness as it expands its software development and delivery tools.
Cosmos will be renamed the Harness Cosmos Software Factory Agent and used to automate engineering work from idea to code. It is designed to take a requirement, ticket or bug report and turn it into merge-ready code through a set of agents that plan changes, write code and tests, and open a pull request.
Each agent runs in an isolated virtual machine, with engineers involved at steps such as approving a design or making the final merge. The system continues through review cycles, responding to reviewer comments or failed checks on the same pull request.
Code and delivery
A central part of the transaction is the combination of Augment's Code Context Engine with Harness's Software Delivery Knowledge Graph. Together, they will connect information about the codebase with data from builds, deployments, infrastructure, security and costs across the software development lifecycle.
Before a change is written, Harness Cosmos will draw on delivery context, including test cases, security requirements, and records of past incidents and remediations. Once code has been created, other Harness agents will use codebase context to assess dependencies, risk and validation needs, with failed checks feeding back into the workflow until an issue is resolved.
Harness already sells software delivery products covering deployment, security testing, runtime protection and cost management. Adding Cosmos extends that reach further upstream into the coding process, linking code generation and review with later deployment and operational controls.
According to Harness, teams will be able to adapt prebuilt specialist agents, including Project Builder, PR Author, Deep Reviewer and PR Fixer, to their own codebases and deploy them more widely across their organisations. Augment's technology also includes model routing, integrations with GitHub, Jira and Slack, and budget and versioning controls for autonomous coding work.
"AI's impact on software will not be measured by how much code it generates, but by how much valuable software reaches customers," said Jyoti Bansal, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Harness.
"Augment Code built Cosmos to create a software factory for repeatable engineering work. With this acquisition, we are bringing code context together with delivery and production context to help agents make better changes from the start. When Harness downstream agents identify an issue while testing, securing, or deploying code, they send it back to Cosmos with the context to fix it," said Bansal.
Autonomy push
The deal reflects a broader push by software tool providers to apply generative AI beyond coding assistants and into more of engineering operations. Rather than stopping at code generation, vendors are increasingly trying to connect planning, coding, testing, deployment and production monitoring in a more continuous process.
Harness framed the acquisition around that wider ambition, with the goal of making engineering work increasingly autonomous while keeping human oversight for decisions that require judgment. Its platform will connect Cosmos workflows with the policies, permissions and approvals already used across existing products.
For Augment Code, the agreement gives its code-focused tools a place within a wider software delivery platform. Its Code Context Engine is intended to maintain a live map of a codebase so changes align with the software's existing structure and history.
"We set out to bring AI to the entire software development lifecycle, starting with context-aware coding," said Igor Ostrovsky, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, Augment Code.
"Joining Harness is the next step toward that vision. Together, we can make engineering work increasingly autonomous, with engineers stepping in only where judgment really matters. We've seen software factories transform how companies build software. Now, with Harness, that same transformation is within reach for every team already on the Harness platform - and every team getting started," said Ostrovsky.
Harness Cosmos is now available.
