Techno Digital opens USD $175m AI-ready hyperscale data centre in Chennai

Today

Techno Digital has inaugurated a 36MW AI-ready hyperscale data centre at SIPCOT IT Park, Siruseri, Chennai, as part of a phased USD $175 million investment under a national USD $1 billion plan for digital infrastructure development.

The new facility spans over 200,000 square feet and offers a hosting capacity of approximately 2,400 high-density racks. Each rack supports power densities ranging from 10kW to over 50kW, targeting demand from AI workloads and supporting enterprise and hyperscale customers. The data centre is positioned within Chennai's major IT corridor, providing connectivity to multiple cable landing stations and core domestic networks.

Power and cooling infrastructure

The centre incorporates an on-site 110kV gas-insulated substation (GIS), which draws dual power feeds from two independent substations via underground cable routes. Power supply reliability is further bolstered by the use of modern uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, which are tested and certified for compatibility with NVIDIA's latest GB200 server series.

Cooling efficiency has been addressed through centrifugal water-cooled chillers and adiabatic cooling towers. According to the company, this cooling approach assists in maintaining a low power usage effectiveness (PUE) and contributes to water conservation, reducing water usage by up to 75% compared with conventional methods.

Strategic location and ecosystem

Techno Digital has chosen Chennai for this project citing its existing infrastructure, favourable business climate, and access to technical talent within Tamil Nadu. The SIPCOT IT Park site is positioned to serve multinational corporations and research institutions based in the region.

"Our Chennai AI-ready hyperscale data center is a significant milestone in our commitment to accelerating the Digital India vision and advancing India's self-reliance initiative. This launch goes beyond infrastructure; it represents a strategic investment in building a future-ready digital ecosystem," said Ankit Saraiya, Director & CEO, Techno Digital. "Chennai stands out as a top destination for hyperscale data centers, due to its robust infrastructure, progressive business policies, and vibrant talent pool. This, coupled with our strong credentials in power infrastructure, strategically positions us as a partner of choice for enterprises looking to modernize, scale, embrace sustainability and future-proof their digital operations."

Demand for data centres in India has increased rapidly, driven by trends such as rising data consumption, digital transformation, cloud adoption, and the deployment of AI and 5G technologies. Operators are pursuing investment in robust, efficient, and secure infrastructure to meet these requirements, with a growing emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainable operation.

"We are thrilled to announce the launch of our AI-ready hyperscale data center in Chennai, a facility that exemplifies progressive technology, precision engineering, and purposeful innovation, built at the intersection of tradition and technology," said Amit Agrawal, President, Techno Digital. "Today's digital-native enterprises demand hyper-availability, seamless scalability, robust security, and operational resilience all while advancing their sustainability goals. We are confident that the strategically located facility on India's southern coast in Chennai, further augmented by our network of interconnected Edge data centers, is well poised to shape the country's digital infrastructure with sustainable, AI-driven, and cloud-optimized offerings."

Sustainability features

Sustainability is a key feature of the new facility's design. The site allocates 25% of its total area to green spaces, which the company says is a first for the region. Energy efficiency measures include an advanced exterior to minimise heat gain, adiabatic cooling to reduce water usage, and the installation of systems for water treatment, recycling, and storage. The centre targets a Rated 3+ reliability standard and aims for US Green Building Council (USGBC) Gold certification.

Padam Prakash Gupta, Managing Director, TEECL, added, "With this strategic expansion, Techno Electric reaffirms its commitment to building a high-quality, benchmark digital infrastructure platform. The Chennai Data Centre facility is a testament to the group's EPC leadership and financial discipline, ensuring superior returns and long-term value creation for all stakeholders."

This Chennai data centre launch follows Techno Digital's strategy to develop hyperscale and edge data centres across India's major cities. The company reports ongoing collaboration with network providers to improve digital connectivity countrywide and facilitate broader access to digital services.

By expanding capacity in Chennai and integrating sustainability measures, Techno Digital intends to address the infrastructure needs of enterprises, technology providers, and public sector initiatives across the country.
