StorONE & Viking unveil unified storage to end legacy silos

Today

StorONE and Viking Enterprise Solutions have announced a partnership aimed at delivering a unified storage platform to replace existing, fragmented legacy systems.

The combined offering brings together Viking's enterprise hardware engineering with StorONE's software-defined storage platform. This joint solution is positioned to support a range of storage workloads, from primary storage and backup to archive, virtualisation, and cloud integration, all managed through a single system.

Unified approach

The intention behind the partnership is to help organisations move away from complex and siloed storage environments. StorONE and Viking aim for their platform to support operational simplicity, improved performance, and the removal of storage silos. The solution is designed to manage enterprise workloads across different tiers, allowing IT departments to scale non-disruptively and use a mix of drive types without being restricted to a single vendor.

Gal Naor, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of StorONE, commented on the aims of the new platform.

StorONE and Viking Enterprise Solutions are redefining enterprise storage by combining cutting-edge hardware with StorONE's unmatched software efficiency. Our joint solution delivers top performance, eliminates complexity, and scales to meet current and future IT demands - enabling Viking customers with StorONE's software, to simply add the drives they need and support their storage use case.

This unified approach allows businesses to respond to changing requirements, incorporating new drives and technologies as needed. The flexibility of the solution is positioned to help customers reduce dependence on multiple storage vendors and hardware refresh cycles.

Performance benchmarks

Recent benchmarking of the joint platform has provided performance data on its capabilities. Testing carried out on Viking's VSS2249RQ system, operating with StorONE software, reported over one million 4K random read input/output operations per second (IOPS) at sub-millisecond latency. Additionally, the platform achieved sustained sequential throughput above 33 GB/s.

Security and protocol support were also highlighted. The system features Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-compliant, artificial intelligence-enabled auto-tiering, integrated ransomware protection, and compatibility with major storage protocols, including Fibre Channel, iSCSI, NVMe-oF, InfiniBand, NFS, SMB, and S3.

Industry perspectives

Mark DeVincent, Senior Vice President and General Manager at Viking Enterprise Solutions, summarised the goal of the collaboration.

This collaboration brings together two engineering-driven companies focused on solving real-world enterprise storage challenges. Our joint platform gives organizations a flexible, cost-effective, and future-ready foundation for their data needs.

The partnership's focus is on creating a foundation that can adapt as data centre needs evolve and as storage technologies develop. Customers will be able to integrate the combined platform with a range of drive types and protocols, providing both scalability and choice.

Customer impact

The new solution is designed for organisations that require enhancement of existing storage infrastructure, consolidation of disparate storage systems, or deployment of unified storage for new projects. According to the companies, this approach enables IT departments to avoid unnecessary complexity and expenses associated with siloed systems and provides a route to maintain performance and availability as their data requirements increase.

With ransomware prevention and compliance features built into the platform, the companies maintain the platform is well suited to environments with regulatory or data security requirements. Protocol compatibility and support for both legacy and new protocols ensure that enterprises can adapt their infrastructure as needed without full rip-and-replace migrations.

StorONE and Viking Enterprise Solutions state the combined solution supports any storage protocol, can run a mix of disks on the same storage volume, and can operate on premises or in the cloud, thereby providing organisations with a future-oriented and vendor-neutral platform.
