IGEL launches hypervisor for secure legacy system use

Fri, 28th Mar 2025

IGEL has launched the IGEL Managed Hypervisor, an extension of its Preventative Security Model aimed at allowing organisations to run legacy operating systems on modern hardware securely.

The IGEL Managed Hypervisor supports integration with IT and OT networks through network segmentation and zero-trust architectures, thereby reducing attack surfaces and enforcing strict access controls. It also facilitates remote troubleshooting and provides security updates. IGEL noted that this marks a significant advancement in enterprise computing by offering a way to run outdated applications securely on new hardware.

Klaus Oestermann, CEO of IGEL, stated, "The launch of IGEL Managed Hypervisor is a defining moment for enterprise computing. As organizations work to converge IT and OT infrastructure while maintaining access to critical legacy applications, IGEL is delivering a breakthrough solution. With IGEL Managed Hypervisor, enterprises can extend the life of their software and hardware investments, enhance endpoint security, and modernize at their own pace — without disruption."

The company has successfully conducted tests with its top platform partners, namely HP, Lenovo, and LG. The IGEL Managed Hypervisor allows legacy apps and operating systems to operate securely on the latest hardware. This service not only extends the lifespan of crucial OT environments but also bolsters endpoint security, allowing enterprises to modernise according to their specific needs. IGEL expressed pride in collaborating with partners to offer practical, secure computing solutions adaptable to future demands.

The new hypervisor enables organisations to dissociate outdated operating systems from their aging hardware. It allows legacy Windows environments, often used in sectors like manufacturing and energy, to run on contemporary devices, which reduces vulnerabilities and improves manageability.

Key features of the IGEL Managed Hypervisor include remote management capabilities, centralised policy enforcement, and integration with IGEL Ready ecosystem partners, offering more control and flexibility over hybrid infrastructures. This makes it an essential tool for organisations pursuing zero-trust strategies while maintaining critical operations.

The IGEL Managed Hypervisor is available for organisations aiming to extend software lifecycles, enhance security, and modernise IT infrastructure without undergoing rigorous overhauls. It is designed to address the particular need for extending the lifespan of legacy operating systems and applications securely on modern devices, thereby maximising hardware and software investments.
