Lantronix has unveiled its new Open-Q 8550CS System-on-Module (SOM), which is powered by Qualcomm Technologies' Dragonwing QCS8550 System-on-Chip (SoC). This SoC offers low-power, on-device AI and machine learning (ML) capabilities.

The Open-Q 8550CS module is designed to address the increasing demands of AI and ML in extreme edge computing. Incorporating aspects like video collaboration and integration with AI gateways, the platform targets developers aiming to bring edge products to market more swiftly.

Mathi Gurusamy, Chief Strategy Officer at Lantronix, highlighted Qualcomm Technologies' support in driving AI innovation at the Edge, indicating that together, they are "transforming the impossible into reality."

Suri Maddhula, Vice President of IoT Solutions Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies, commented on the collaboration: "Qualcomm Technologies' 15-year strategic collaboration with Lantronix supports our mutual goal of delivering integrated, collaborative solutions to elevate the success of IoT, Edge AI and AI/ML technologies to drive the development of advanced-edge applications."

The Open-Q 8550CS SOM's feature set includes a Kryo Octa-core CPU, an Adreno A740 GPU, dual eNPU, extensive security features, and high-speed enterprise-level connectivity with Wi-Fi 7, offering maximum throughput up to 5.8Gbps. It supports up to 8GB LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB UFS Flash.

Significant enhancements from its AI engine allow for improved video conferencing and smart camera image quality alongside scalable Edge AI box processing. This is complemented by capabilities for complex 3D rendering and computer vision tasks supported by the Adreno 740 GPU. Qualcomm's Sensing Hub 3.0 is also supported, indicating suitability for advanced sensor integration.

Lantronix offers the Open-Q 8550CS SOM Development Kit to facilitate product development. This kit incorporates an open-frame carrier board that exposes the full range of input/output capabilities. By offering a comprehensive evaluation platform, it aims to shorten development cycles for products and solutions.

Lantronix affirms compliance with TAA and NDAA standards to ensure product longevity and quality. The company has leveraged over 20 years of development experience in delivering hardware and software projects that adhere to rigorous manufacturing standards.

In addition to product offerings, Lantronix provides engineering services to support developers in camera development, machine learning, and RF design. The firm has been involved in over 1,500 products, underscoring its expertise in accelerating market readiness for innovations.
