Rolls-Royce & TCS test hydrogen aero engine flight

Tata Consultancy Services and Rolls-Royce have demonstrated a modern aero gas turbine operating through a fully simulated flight cycle using 100% hydrogen, which they described as an industry first.

The demonstration covered take-off, cruise and landing, with a modified engine running entirely on hydrogen. It concluded a four-year programme led by Rolls-Royce to assess hydrogen as a potential aviation fuel, with TCS joining later as an engineering partner.

The project is part of a broader push by aircraft and engine makers to find lower-carbon options for air travel, one of the hardest sectors to decarbonise. Aviation accounts for about 2% to 3% of global carbon dioxide emissions, and hydrogen has attracted interest because, if deployed at scale, it could eliminate in-flight CO2 emissions.

The tests validated hydrogen propulsion technologies across combustion, fuel systems and engine controls, according to Rolls-Royce. TCS said it contributed engineering work on fuel system and engine controls integration, hydrogen combustion analysis, test preparation, validation, data analytics, risk management and detailed design.

Although TCS is best known as an IT services and consulting group, it has expanded into industrial engineering programmes with manufacturers in sectors including aerospace, automotive and energy. In this programme, it worked with Rolls-Royce on development, testing and validation.

The hydrogen effort was first announced by Rolls-Royce and airline easyJet. TCS joined later, adding software, systems and engineering support as the programme moved towards full flight-cycle testing.

Engine testing

The latest result centres on the operation of a modern aero gas turbine rather than a commercial aircraft in service. Even so, a full simulated flight cycle is a significant technical step because it shows how an engine performs through the main stages of operation, not just under a single test condition.

Hydrogen presents challenges for engine developers because it behaves differently from conventional jet fuel. That affects fuel storage and supply, combustion control, and how engine systems are managed through changing phases of flight.

Adam Newman, Chief Engineer, Hydrogen Demonstrator Programme, Rolls-Royce, said, "The programme marks an important milestone in our journey towards more sustainable aviation. Through a rigorous and carefully staged testing approach, we have gained valuable insights into how 100% hydrogen behaves in a modern aero gas turbine across a full flight cycle while validating critical combustion, fuel and control system technologies. TCS has been a trusted partner throughout this programme. The learnings from this initiative will support future propulsion innovations, including UltraFan, and strengthen our confidence that gas turbine technology can continue to play an important role in the future of sustainable flight."

That reference to UltraFan suggests Rolls-Royce sees the hydrogen work as informing its broader propulsion research, although it has not said when or how hydrogen engines might enter commercial service. The aviation industry still faces major hurdles in fuel production, airport infrastructure, storage, regulation and aircraft design before hydrogen flight can move beyond demonstrators.

Broader effort

The programme involved a wider group from across the aviation ecosystem, including easyJet, NASA and the UK Health and Safety Executive. Their involvement reflects the range of technical and safety questions raised by hydrogen propulsion as companies test it for aviation use.

For TCS, the work also highlights its strategy of linking digital and engineering services more closely with large industrial projects. Manufacturers increasingly want software, controls integration, simulation, analytics and validation alongside mechanical engineering, especially in development programmes where complex systems must be tested together.

The demonstration adds to a growing body of work on alternative aviation propulsion, alongside efforts involving sustainable aviation fuel, battery-electric systems and hybrid designs. Rolls-Royce and TCS said the knowledge from the hydrogen programme will help shape future propulsion technologies and support the sector's shift towards lower-carbon air travel.
